Quickstart

From spreadsheet to live web app

Everything Love Spreadsheets does, start to finish. We build a CRM in this guide. You can use the same steps to make a dashboard, client portals, a project tracker, a form, anything really.

What this covers

Every build follows the same path: connect your spreadsheets & Google Sheets, upload your company logo & app layout (optional), connect anything else your web app needs (optional integrations), answer a few questions, and let it build. Afterwards you decide who can sign in and what URL your web app lives at.

To show this flow end to end we will build a CRM from two messy Google Sheets. By the end it will live at your own domain (crm.yourcompany.com), your team signs in and each person sees only what they should, and the notes they keep on each lead feed an email campaign that an AI agent drafts and sends on a schedule.

You can use this same process & steps to build dashboards, client portals, project trackers, forms, anything you want.

The finished CRM — 23 leads across the pipeline, drafted emails, scoped views

What you need

Your Google Sheets with your leads. Messy is fine. You can have merged cells, several tabs, headers starting on row four, inconsistent dates. More than one sheet is fine too, and is what we will use here.

Or use ours. Drop them into Google Drive, open each as a Sheet, and follow along exactly:

  • leads-master.xlsx23 leads across two tabs. Messy contact information and notes written per lead.
  • event-leads.xlsx14 badge scans from a conference. Completely different columns, and a few companies that already exist in the first file.

Build it

01

Connect your Google Sheets

Both of them. They do not need to match.

Connect the main lead list and the event list. They will not have the same columns, and that is okay. The tool will read both and works out what maps to what.

You can also upload these as regular Excel files as well.

02

Connect your email

Your own domain, not a Gmail address.

The campaign sends from you, which means connecting the address you actually use — hello@ilovespreadsheets.com, say. You can also use a personal Gmail account.

This is a one-time setup and the app handles the sending afterwards.

A custom email integration, so the campaign sends from your own address
03

Add your logo and anything showing how your CRM should look

A logo, a mockup, a screenshot of something you like.

Drop in your logo and any design reference. You can draw blocks on a PowerPoint slide, attach your screenshots. Images, PDFs and HTML all work, 25 MB each, as many as you like.

The build picks up your colors, your type and the layout you showed it, so what comes out looks like your company rather than a generic template.

You can add these after the first version of the website is built as well

04

Say what to build

The prompt

Write down what you need to build in plain language

What to type
Build a CRM from these two sheets. The first is my live lead list. The second is badge scans from a conference. Match those in by email, and flag the ones that are new.

Stages are New, Contacted, Qualified, Won, Lost. Show total deal value per stage, and let me add a lead without opening the spreadsheet.

Each lead has a Notes field where my reps write what was actually said. Use those notes to draft a follow-up email for anything sitting in Contacted or Qualified that hasn't been touched in 14 days. Send them Monday mornings from hello@ilovespreadsheets.com, and show me the drafts on the CRM before they go out.

All reps should be able to see ONLY their leads. Their emails are their names@ilovespreadsheets.com with the names from the sheets. The hello@ilovespreadsheets.com admin email should be able to see everything

05

Answer the questions

The AI will ask you to clarify information that is needed

You will see 5-15 questions so the AI can understand your spreadsheets and request in more detail

If a question does not make sense then you can write your own answer OR skip

The questions it asks before building. This one is about how a badge scan should merge into an existing lead.
06

AI builds your web app

A few minutes, and it is a real app at a real URL.

What comes out is a working web app at a URL that you can share with your team. Everything connected live to your Google Sheets.

The AI email drafting agent that you created will automatically draft and write emails that you can view on a tab

Emails the AI drafted from the notes on each lead, waiting for review
07

Ask the AI to change anything

All edits are made live

Say what you want to change and the AI edits your app in place. Your app URL remains the same no matter how much editing is done.

A change asked for in plain language, landing in the live app
08

Ask a real engineer to change anything

Live in the same chat

If the AI gets something wrong twice, or if you just need more help. A real engineer can join the same conversation, open your app, and fix it with you. This is included on every plan, including Free.

09

Your sheet is still the source of truth

Edit a row in the Sheet. It is already in the app.

And vice versa. Edit something in the web app and the sheets stay in sync. Edit something in the sheet and it shows up in the web app.

This way you can continue using the sheets that your business already runs on.

Finish it

10

Set permissions

Who signs in, and what each of them can see.

You can set roles and permissions for your team members so only the right person can see the right data

Manage username and passwords, and roles right from your web app dashboard

11

Connect your domain

crm.yourcompany.com, secure HTTPS

You can connect your company's domain to your web apps so you access and share your apps on your own domain. HTTPS certificates included

Where people go next

The app you just built is the first one, not the only one. These are the three things people do within the first week.

Add it to your admin dashboard

Every app you build can live as a tile on one dashboard, so you open a single URL that runs your entire business.

Build another app on the same sheets

The same lead data can back more than one thing: a dashboard for the numbers your CEO asks about, a public form that feeds new leads in. Start a new project, connect the sheets you already connected, describe the second app.

Keep adding to this one

Attach another spreadsheet when a new source turns up. Add automations as you work out what should happen on its own. Connect another service when you need the app talking to something else. It is the same chat you built it in.
